Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative Disc Disease
What Causes Degenerative Disc Disease?
It is a progressive condition that can happen from wear and tear over time. These discs are made of cartilage, fibrous tissues, and water between each spine vertebra. These discs naturally shrink and lose water. Other reasons can be an injury, no physical activity, repetitive activity that puts too much pressure on the discs, obesity, or a sedentary lifestyle.
How is Degenerative Disc Disease Diagnosed?
We thoroughly assess the patient’s medical history, signs, or symptoms and perform a physical examination. Some questions include when the pain started, where it spread, family history, etc. A physical exam may look for any pain while any movement, muscle strength, or nerve function as to how nerves respond to hot or cold. Then, further tests may be recommended, such as CT scans or MRI scans, to check the status of spinal nerves and discs. A discogram may be performed where a dye is injected into the center or several discs, and it shows up on the scans.
