Kyphosis
Kyphosis
There are several types of Kyphosis, such as postural kyphosis, in which poor posture stretches the ligaments and muscles holding your vertebrae in place. When the person stretches, it pulls the vertebrae more than the normal position. This kyphosis is more common in children. Scheuermann’s kyphosis is when the vertebrae are wedge-shaped instead of rectangular. The wedge-shaped bones curve forward, making your spine look rounded. This can be painful, and unfortunately, it does not change the shape in case you change your posture as it isn’t flexible. Congenital kyphosis means when the spine does not develop properly or entirely in the uterus. This increases in severity as you grow.
What Causes Kyphosis?
- Poor posture
- Structural abnormalities of the bones
- Bone growth abnormalities (shape of the bone)
- Spinal injury
- Your age
How is Kyphosis Diagnosed?
During school screenings, children’s condition can be diagnosed at an early stage. Parents and the child can visit a physician and specialist for a thorough assessment and examination. But for adults, some signs can be rounded shoulders, a curve in the upper back, tight muscles in the back or thighs. In cases of severity, pain, breathlessness, balance issues, numbness, or weakness in the legs are common. The healthcare provider thoroughly assesses the medical history, family history, signs or symptoms, physical examination, and diagnosis. For instance, in the bending test, the patient gently bends forward with knees together and straight and arms hanging on the sides. This determines the spine curve or any other spine problem. Spinal X-rays, MRIs, etc., are common tests to determine the condition. Depending on the results, the treatment is customized for an individual to suit their needs.
